| George Clooney said Thursday that his new role as a U.N. Messenger of Peace is one of his most difficult yet, especially because he wasn't exactly allowed to deliver his message.
Clooney, the ninth U.N. peace envoy, was scheduled to address a meeting of troop-contributing nations about conditions faced by the peacekeeping force in Sudan's troubled western region.
The actor recently visited Darfur with U.N. peacekeeping officials and said he saw that a lack of helicopters and other equipment was hindering the force's efforts to protect civilians and itself.

| George Clooney has been invited to step in as mediator in Nigeria’s ongoing conflict between the country’s government and its rebels - by the armed group who are protesting against the authorities.
The members of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) have written an open letter to the Hollywood actor - who was named a United Nations Messenger Of Peace on Friday - to help in negotiations between themselves and the government of President Umaru Yar’Adua.
The letter reads: "Mr Clooney, MEND extends an invitation to you to see things for yourself and is willing to work with you and other credible peace makers of international repute to stop Nigeria from plunging into the abyss of war."
The MEND rebels in the Niger Delta - the oil-producing area of the African country - have been making the headlines since 2006 for their bomb attacks on oil facilities and kidnapping foreign workers in their efforts to secure control over the region’s oil.

George Clooney and Don Cheadle, co-stars in "Ocean's Eleven" and its two sequels, have received this year's Men of Peace Award in Rome.
Clooney and Cheadle were recognized at the 8th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates for their humanitarian work "in favor of peace in the troubled region of Darfur and for having contributed toward saving lives and alleviating the suffering of the civilian victims of the war," ANSA reported Thursday.
The pair helped establish Not On Our Watch, an organization created to attract world-wide attention to violence and poverty in Darfur.
"We are here to give a voice to those who otherwise would not be listened to. And speaking of voices, it's time that those of heads of state be heard. Peace, like war, is a process which must move forward'," Clooney said in accepting his award.
"But we are here also to recognize an example of failure, if we consider the atrocities which continue to take place in Darfur."

George Clooney sympathizes with Britney Spears in her troubles with paparazzi following her.
"You look at the footage of Britney running the red light – there's eight guys with cameras at night in the middle of the street. There are no rules now," he tells Entertainment Tonight in an interview airing Tuesday. "It's getting to a point where people that are not involved are getting hurt."
Clooney, 46, who was involved in a near-collision with paparazzi Nov. 16 while riding on his motorcycle in the Hollywood Hills, fears for his neighbors.
"What they're doing is illegal, it's high speed chases and they're competing with each other," he says. "They're not trying to catch me doing something stupid; they're trying to create me doing something stupid. You don't get to break all these laws and then say, 'I'm just doing my job.' The guys that commit all these crimes are rewarded for it. It creates bounty hunters in a way."
Clooney's advice for the paparazzi: "Take your pictures but don't go 60 mph down a one-way street. Don't cause injury to people who aren't involved."

Turns out A lot more people than George Clooney and his girlfriend were hurt by the Hollywood hunk’s motorcycle accident last month.
As many as 40 doctors and other employees at the Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen, N.J., got suspensions for allegedly leaking confidential medical information about the couple in violation of federal law, according to broadcast and Internet reports.
Told about the fallout firings, Clooney went to bat for the workers: he told “Extra.”
PMC spokesman Eurice Rojas couldn’t be reached for comment, but the hospital said in a statement it takes any violation of a law seriously and that it was investigating.
Clooney broke a rib and got scraped up in the Sept. 21 crash in Weehawken, while his passenger, Sarah Larson, broke her foot when their motorcycle collided with a car on a narrow street.
Those suspended were accused of passing Clooney’s medical records on to the press.
Seven members of the Health Professionals and Allied Employees Union were suspended without pay for four weeks, said spokeswoman Jeanne Oterson.
